Enrolling Dependents: 2008 - 09
The SHIP provides health care coverage and protection against unexpected health care expenses for the enrolled dependents of Cornell students.
Eligibility
If you are enrolled in the SHIP, you may also enroll your:
- lawful spouse/same-sex partner (residing with you)
- unmarried children (including stepchildren and foster children) under the age of 19, who are not self-supporting, and who reside with you or for whom you are court-ordered to provide insurance
Enrollment
Dependents are not automatically enrolled. If you wish to enroll your dependent(s), please contact the Cornell Office of Student Health Insurance to fill out the necessary forms and arrange for premium payments. You must do this each year you wish to enroll dependent(s).
Enrollment deadlines:
- For students enrolling in the fall semester: September 30, 2008
- For students entering Cornell for the spring semester:: February 28, 2009
- Late registrants: within 30 days of registration
If you have a dependent who experiences a significant life change that directly
affects his or her insurance coverage (such as a loss of coverage from a prior
plan, marriage, divorce, or reasons beyond a person’s control), the deadline to
enroll in the SHIP is 30 days after the significant life-changing event.
Students who waived in favor of alternate insurance and subsequently lose their
coverage. They will be eligible to enroll for SHIP coverage before May 2, 2009.
Alternatively, they may wait and enroll the following plan year (begining August
17, 2009).
Premium
The annual premium for your spouse or same-sex partner is $3,282. The total premium for children (whether you have one or more than one) is $2,032.
Premiums for dependents may be paid monthly. This Installment Payment Plan allows
you to pay over time and carries a small service charge. You must sign up for
this at the beginning of each year before the September 30 deadline (February 28 for spring entrants).
Installments are only transacted to your bursar account between September and
April, depending on your time of enrollment.
